THE SCHOLA CANTORUM

.....The Schola Cantorum of St. Stephen, a chamber choir of some of Washington 's most accomplished singers, is our parish's resident professional choral ensemble. The Schola first enriched the prayer life of our church in the 2003 – 2004 season, singing for solemn liturgies and special events. Now the Schola sings each Sunday for Lauds (Morning Prayer) and the Solemn Eucharist at 11:00am. Their repertoire runs through an entire millenium of sacred choral literature, singing music from every period with musicality, depth, clarity and sensitivity to style.

.....In August of 2005, the Schola completed their very first CD, “Ecos Sonoros: from Spain to Latin America ,” recorded right here, in the sumptuous acoustic of St. Stephen's. As a fundraiser and companion to our organ project, this CD features some of the most spectacular Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Twentieth Century choral literature from Spain and Latin America. Accompanied by ‘La Rocinante' Chamber Orchestra, the Schola hopes to set the listener's ears aflame with the beauty and passion of Catholic sacred song – from the opulence of colonial Spain to the effusive rhythmic complexities of modern Brazil and Argentina . Check our Calendar Page for information about the Schola's live concert performances in the Washington metropolitan area.
