"'Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves under the tree. Now that you have come this close to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves: and afterward you may go on your way.'"
(Genesis 18: 4 - 5)

.....Welcome, friend, to our home. Like Abraham's "tree," we offer our home as a place of prayer and refreshment amidst the bustle of Pennsylvania Avenue . In this ancient tradition of hospitium , we join you in a special affection - that of both gracious host and gentle sojourner. It is our privilege to be your hosts, but also to be fellow guests at the Lord's Table. What better place for strangers to meet than at his Celestial Banquet?
.....The heart of St. Stephen's is worship and prayer. Our parish celebrates Christ through the beauty, the depth, and the richness of Christian Liturgy, ever ancient and ever new. The deeply-rooted devotional life of St. Stephen's makes it home to many passers-by who seek a moment with the Lord. Within the smooth, curving arches of the church is a meditative quiet, an almost monastic stillness. Our space offers solitude for Catholics and non-Catholics alike who come just to sit in contemplation. Natural light streaming through the Western windows combines with the glow of votive candles as another reminder of God's radiant presence. As Catholics we believe in the true, tangible presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, and we come here to be renewed in his midst.
.....Washington 's Foggy Bottom and West End boast a unique mix of cultures. Our neighborhood is blessed with many students, travelers, federal workers, musicians, writers, embassy and State Department staffers, hotel personnel, couples and singles, old and young, life-long residents and transients. From this fabric is woven an ever-changing tapestry: This is our parish family.
.....Come, be refreshed, and know that the Lord is with you. If you come to worship with us, do introduce yourself. Once a guest in our home, you are a stranger no longer, but a friend in the Lord Jesus Christ. |
